The speed with which the Chinese high-speed network has developed is mind-boggling. Since the opening of the Beijing to Tianjin line for the Olympic Games in 2008, authorised for a speed of 350 km/h, inaugurations of new lines have followed each other at a fast pace, in particular Beijing – Shanghai (1,318 km), authorised at 350 km/h. On this line, 486 km/h was officially clocked in 2010 by a CRH 380 A trainset, representing a world speed record for a non-modified trainset. The speed of 350 km/h is also authorised on the Wuhan – Guangzhou line, opened in 2009, where the average speed is the highest in the world: 313 km/h. In 2012, Beijing and Shenzhen, the northern and southern metropolises of China, were connected, followed by an extension in 2018 to Hong Kong. It is the longest high-speed line in the world: 2,240 km.
The network pursued its development, with a rise in line openings at the end of each year. The country began to well-covered and connected, including Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, at the very end of a 1,785-km-line opened in a single phase.
It is noteworthy that all new lines are not authorised for the same speeds. If the principal lines are authorised at 350 km/h, the others are limited to 250 km/h or 200 km/h.
High-speed trains operating under the China Railways High-speed (CRH) brand were at their origin the fruit of foreign technology - Alstom, Bombardier, Siemens, Kawasaki. A new generation of trains saw the light of day: the Fuxinghao. Entirely designed and manufactured in China, this train runs at 350 km/h.
